We had become a 7-piece ensemble and were beginning to feel more and more of a kinship with groups that have a lot of members in them. So for the first time in our musical life we began to think of ourselves as вЂAN AMERICAN BANDвЂ™вЂ¦ telling ourselves that it would be our identity for our next creative adventure. not really caring WHERE we were actually from. for most of our musical life (as The Flaming Lips starting in 1983) weвЂ™ve kind of thought of ourselves as coming from вЂEarthвЂ™. it wasnвЂ™t till I was about 10 or 11 that my older brothers would know a few of the local musician dudes. We mostly listened to the Beatles and my mother loved Tom Jones (this is in the 60вЂ™s). I know growing up (when I was like 6 or 7 years old) in Oklahoma I was never influenced by, or was very aware of any musicians from Oklahoma.

We never thought of ourselves as an AMERICAN band. The band recently covered Bob DylanвЂ™s 1969 song вЂњLay Lady LayвЂќ as a part of the upcoming Dylan Revisited compilation from UK magazine Uncut. The Flaming LipsвЂ™ last album was 2020вЂ™s American Head, which made it to #47 on our Top 100 Albums of 2020 list. ItвЂ™ll be released on vinyl for the first time and is limited to 16,000 copies worldwide on a 2-LP double silver vinyl edition. It contains B-sides, outtakes, and early mixes of songs from the classic 1999 album, as well as some stereo mixes of songs from their 1997 album Zaireeka (which was released on four CDs to be played at once). The Soft Bulletin Companion was originally only sent out to press, radio, friends, and family. ItвЂ™s the wow speech bubble photo at the 30-second moment. Finally, the band is releasing The Soft Bulletin Companion on Record Store Day (June 12) via Warner Records. Also, on yesterdayвЂ™s CBS Sunday Morning they did a great segment on the bandвЂ™s recent space bubble concerts. They stretch into 2022 and include shows in North America and the UK. The Flaming Lips have announced some new tour dates.
